What does IPR mean?
IPR stands for interproximal reduction, sometimes called enamel reduction or tooth slimming.
It involves gently polishing away a very small amount of enamel from between selected teeth. The amount removed is minimal, usually fractions of a millimetre, but it can create just enough space for your teeth to move into their planned position.
Not everyone having Invisalign will need IPR. Your dentist will only recommend it if it’s beneficial for your treatment.
Why is IPR used with Invisalign?
Sometimes your teeth simply don’t have enough room to move where they need to go.
Rather than removing teeth or dramatically changing your treatment plan, creating a small amount of extra space between certain teeth can allow Invisalign to work more effectively.
IPR may be recommended to:
- Improve mild crowding
- Help straighten overlapping teeth
- Create space for tooth movement
- Improve the final appearance of your smile
- Reduce the chance of teeth moving back after treatment

Does IPR hurt?
This is one of the questions we hear most often.
For most patients, IPR isn’t painful.
Because only the outer enamel is treated, there’s usually no need for injections or anaesthetic. You may feel a little pressure or vibration while it’s being carried out, but the procedure is generally quick and comfortable.
Many patients are surprised by how straightforward it feels.
Is IPR safe?
Yes. When carried out by an experienced dentist, IPR is considered a safe and well-established technique.
Only a very small amount of enamel is removed, and your treatment is carefully planned to ensure the correct amount of space is created.
Your dentist will never recommend IPR unless it’s appropriate for your teeth and your treatment goals.
How much enamel is removed?
Usually, only around 0.1 to 0.5 millimetres of enamel is removed between selected teeth.
To put that into perspective, it’s often less than the thickness of a fingernail.
The aim isn’t to make your teeth noticeably smaller. It’s simply to create enough room for predictable tooth movement.
Will my teeth look different after IPR?
No. Because such a small amount of enamel is removed from between the teeth, most patients won’t notice any difference to the size or appearance of their teeth.
In fact, once your Invisalign treatment is complete, the overall result often looks more balanced because crowded or overlapping teeth have been straightened.
Does everyone need IPR with Invisalign?
No. Some Invisalign treatments don’t require any IPR at all.
Whether it’s recommended depends on factors including:
- How crowded your teeth are
- The movements needed
- The amount of space available
- Your overall treatment plan

How long does IPR take?
IPR is usually carried out during one of your Invisalign appointments and only takes a few minutes.
Once it’s complete, you can continue wearing your aligners as planned. Most patients are able to return to their normal routine straight afterwards.
